Texas DMV Redesign

Overview:

Transforming your Texas DMV experience, our streamlined website provides quick, intuitive access to all your needs as a new Texan. Designed for efficiency, it simplifies managing your DMV tasks, allowing residents to handle everything easily from home.

Three-week turnaround: Redesigned navigation for the Texas DMV website. Delivered a high-fidelity, functional mobile and desktop prototype (Figma) including a redesigned Home Page and three additional pages defined by user paths.

Finding out the Problem:

User testing revealed that the Texas DMV website is challenging to navigate, causing significant confusion about where to click and how to proceed. The text-heavy pages and numerous duplicate links further contributed to users feeling lost and overwhelmed.

Prioritizing navigation, we defined a user path reflecting the typical experience of a new Texas resident on the Texas DMV website. We also conducted card sorts to refine the navigation, introducing a 'New Resident' category and renaming several categories where wording caused confusion in our user tests.

Our Solution:

With the new navigation bar, we anticipated a significant increase in the usability test success rate compared to the original site. For the mobile version, we aimed to simplify navigation by streamlining the homepage, relocating unnecessary buttons and links into a new hamburger menu with overlays.

We began by designing the wireframe navigation bar to ensure the new user path was effective. We then developed a low-fidelity prototype, focusing on the 'New Resident,' 'Vehicle Registration,' and 'Change of Address' pages. Our design aimed to capture the essence of Texas, resulting in a visually appealing theme that highlights the beauty of the Lone Star State.

From Process to Polish:

Testing our redesign revealed areas for improvement as we progressed through iterations. Identifying missing elements was crucial, given the vast scope of the DMV's content. We made several adjustments based on user tests, including reworking overlay screen colors for mobile and adding a home button on secondary screens.

Feedback:

Our team appreciates the valuable feedback from our users, who found the site streamlined, easy to navigate, and appreciated its welcoming, Texas-inspired feel. They also noted that content chunking improved readability. Moving forward, we plan to reformat the Spanish translation to better serve Texas' growing non-English speaking population.
